Resources for Today

Dear Region 8 OA,

It’s the 12th of April and as usual, the Twelfth Step Within (TSW) Committee reaches out on this day. What a challenge this last month or so has been for all of us! As a member of the TSW committee I see how it’s all the more important to reach out to each other by text, email or phone especially with most face-to-face meetings cancelled. Since this is a “WE program” and I don’t get better by myself, utilizing our online and phone meetings has been critical to maintaining my program and my abstinence. My home meeting uses a conference call format and we’ve been able to continue our regular meetings that way. Maintaining my own absence, especially during this stressful time is the best way thing I can do for myself and fellow Compulsive Overeaters. Continuing to share and hearing others experience strength and hope, has carried me through the recent necessary physical isolation. Maintaining contact with my Sponsor and Sponsees has also been critical.

What about you? How can you maintain your program/abstinence AND reach out during these stressful times? Here are some ideas:

— Bulk up with online resources on the World Service (WSO) and    Region 8 websites

— Take the time to reach out to all your group members especially those who may be struggling…

— Use this “downtime” to write articles for OA

— Double down on your OWN program work

— Consider using ALL the Tools (for a change)

Here’s what I know- Each time I take steps forward in my own recovery, it pulls the entire group forward. Then when I reach out to others it comes back to help me as well. This repeats over and over again in a complete circle of recovery.

Take care of yourselves during this time and let’s come out on the other end stronger in our recovery than we were before…

OA hugs from the TSW Committee,

The OA Resources document has great tips for doing on line and zoom meetings and OA literature for meetings to assist you with shelter at home meetings.

2018 Summer Social Joyful!

I enjoyed the Summer Social so much!! We had a great turn out from people all over North Carolina especially our wonderful speaker from Greensboro and people from Raleigh, Hickory and Winston Salem. I enjoyed being in the skit. The silent auction was a great success as well as the rummage sale. Quite a few services were bid upon and there were many happy winners. There was a good spirit that permeated the social. Everyone seemed happy to be there. Thanks to the people for pulling everything together and making the social such a very special day!

I so appreciated the opportunity to get to know people in new ways – rehearsing, improvising and casting people for a skit for us, by us.  What a talented group we are!  It was also so nice to meet with the 2nd annual NC OA State Convention committee after the summer social at an abstinent lunch.

Shared strength, courage, gratitude

I wanted to share how I was affected by all of the beautiful OA speakers at the convention this past weekend. I am so grateful for all of the honesty, hope, and joy they shared! Their strength and courage, gratitude, and recovery made me feel like I could climb any hurdle to my recovery, and they reaffirmed how working the Steps and relying on my HP can lead to miracles unlimited.

The whole weekend was a gift. I will never forget it or our speakers!

1st NC Convention Speaker’s Reflection

I was honored to have an opportunity to address the attendees at North Carolina’s first state convention. It was so well run, and the people so friendly that I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

And the format enabled me to both schmooze and take naps and get to know some people more than I otherwise might have been able to.

I take with me many happy memories, and the knowledge that I’ll be staying in touch with more new friends in my ever expanding OA family.

Protect and defend your abstinence. It’s worth it and you’re worth it.

What would you think when asked to tell about your higher power?

The speakers at the NCOA Convention brought a diverse and timely message to me. Hearing their stories and their messages brought hope to me that I too could share in their recovery. I was fortunate to be able to spend time with several of them outside the formal conference setting. It was eye opening. One asked me “tell me about your higher power”. That was a “Wow” moment for me and led to a wonderful discussion.

One of the most rewarding things about the convention was meeting and bonding with new people. Expanding my OA Family is a blessing. Having the opportunity to give service there was very rewarding. OA is made up of an amazing group of people and getting to know more of them was wonderful. Now, how am I going to remember all those names?

Greensboro Recovery Workshop Joy

On March 24, 2018, two groups of Charlotte OA members attended a Recovery Workshop held in Greensboro, NC.  They started off with a funny icebreaker, moved on to an abstinence workshop and then had a strong speaker.

Following that, we paired off and were given a recovery issue to discuss. There was a lot of recovery there but the best part for me was the honest and sincere sharing. There’s nothing like a good workshop to put some inspiration into my program! It was so nice to meet and share with other recovering OA folks. The fellowship and community of OA is very valuable to me; another blessing from my Higher Power:

a true gift! 💝
